Top Tips for Cooking Ostrich Eggs

Discover the best practices for cooking ostrich eggs with these top tips and tricks.

Exploring the Grandeur of Ostrich Eggs

Ostrich eggs are truly a marvel of nature. They are the largest eggs in the world, weighing somewhere around 3 to 5 pounds and are equivalent to approximately 24-36 chicken eggs. With their beautiful opal white colour and thick, sturdy shell, Ostrich eggs are a sight to behold.

This is a perfect example of a fresh Ostrich egg.  Ostrich eggs are typically a shiny, opal colouring just like this picture.

In addition to their impressive size, Ostrich eggs have a unique taste and texture. They have a light flavor and a smooth, creamy consistency that is perfect for various culinary creations.

Whether you want to impress your guests with a showstopping brunch or simply want to try something new in the kitchen, cooking Ostrich eggs is an exciting adventure that will take your cooking skills to the next level.

Preparing the Ostrich Egg

Before you can start cooking an Ostrich egg, it's essential to properly prepare it. Follow these steps to ensure you get the most out of your ostrich egg:

1. Clean the egg: Gently wash the egg with warm water and mild soap.  Rinse it thoroughly and pat it dry with a clean towel.  All of our eggs are washed before refrigeration, but a second wash is recommended.

2. Crack the egg: Use the back of a thick knife, or the corner of a meat cleaver to make a small hole in the top of the egg. You can use a drill if you want to save the egg for decorative purposes, but a larger hole will be required to get the egg out without scrambling it in the shell.

3. Empty the contents: There will be a lot of egg there, so we recommend finding a recipe that is scalable and using it all up at once.

4. Rinse the shell: Rinse the empty shell with warm water to remove any remaining egg residue. Let it dry completely before using it for decoration or art.

Cooking Methods for Ostrich Eggs

Cooking an Ostrich egg requires a slightly different approach compared to cooking chicken eggs due to its size. Here are a few popular cooking methods you can try:

1. Hard-boiling: This method is similar to hard-boiling chicken eggs but requires a longer cooking time. Place the egg in a large pot of boiling water and cook for about 90 minutes. Once cooked, it can be peeled and eaten the same as any other.  I would recommend making egg salad for a party to use up the whole egg.

2. Scrambling: Scrambling an Ostrich egg is a great way to enjoy its unique flavor and texture. Crack the egg into a bowl, whisk it lightly, and cook it in a greased pan over medium heat. Stir gently until the egg is fully cooked but still moist.  You do not need to add any milk to get nice, fluffy eggs.

3. Baking: Baking an Ostrich egg is perfect for creating impressive dishes such as quiches or frittatas. Whisk the egg with your desired ingredients and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 45-60 minutes, or until the center is set.

These are just a few cooking methods to get you started, but feel free to experiment and get creative with your Ostrich egg culinary adventures.

Key Tips for Cooking Ostrich Eggs

When cooking Ostrich eggs, keep these key tips in mind to ensure the best results:

1. Be patient, and flexible with cooking times: Due to their size, Ostrich eggs require longer cooking times compared to chicken eggs. It's important to be patient and allow the egg to cook thoroughly to achieve the desired consistency.  Also, the size of the Ostrich egg plays a role here...you may need to cook for a shorter time with a smaller egg, and a longer time for a larger egg.  The minimum 90-minute rule will apply to the larger eggs.

2. Season well: Ostrich eggs have a mild flavor, so make sure to season them to taste with salt, pepper, and other spices to enhance their taste.

3. Get creative with recipes: Ostrich eggs are versatile and can be used in various recipes, from omelets and quiches to custards and desserts. Don't be afraid to explore new flavors and experiment with different ingredients.

By following these key tips, you'll be well-equipped to cook Ostrich eggs like a pro.
